Week 12 Game Analysis
With games on Thanksgiving, I’ve posted my analysis for those three games. I’ll post the rest soon. Enjoy…
Packers @ Lions
Last Week: Packers beat Panthers 31-17; Lions lost to Giants 16-10
Game Notes: Packers QB Brett Favre threw for three touchdowns in the 31-17 win last week. He had a little help from the running game as Ryan Grant carried 20 times for 88 yards, but Grant suffered an ankle injury and he’s day-to-day for Thursday. Lions: the Giants defense held the Lions to 10 points last week. Kitna threw for 377 yards but only one score. He was also picked off three times. As for the Lions running game, they attempted only 11 carries and had only one rushing first down. (Apparently their weren’t eager to improve upon thier -18 rushing yards last week.) The Green Bay Packers run defense is giving up 92.9 yards per game, 7th in the league. If the Lions didn’t run against the Giants, will they attempt to run against the Packers? I would hope they at least attempt more than 11 carries.
Key Injuries: Packers: RB Ryan Grant (probable); DT Johnny Jolly (out); S Nick Collins (out); TE Bubba Franks (out); T Chad Clifton (probable); WR Koren Robinson (probable); CB Charles Woodson (probable). Lions: S Idrees Bashir (IR); LB Teddy Lehmen (questionable); T Jonathan Scott (probable); DE Dewayne White (probable).
Edge: Packers. Favre has been carrying the Packers on his back and they’ve got momentum. The Lions will look to pass, but the Packers have hauled in nine interceptions on the season. Statistically, for every four passing TDs the Packers give up, they’re grabbing three interceptions.
Jets @ Cowboys
Last Week: Jets beat Steelers 19-16; Cowboys beat Redskins 28-23
Game Notes: How about those Jets…seven sacks, one interception and one forced fumble in their overtime win against Pittsburgh. Quarterback Kellen Clemens’ contribution to the game isn’t visible on the stat sheet. Clemens went 14-of-31 for 162 yards, but made some big plays including a first-down scramble in the fourth quarter that helped set up a game-tying field goal. Running back Thomas Jones also had one of his biggest games of the year. Jones finished with 117 yards on 30 carries. It was the most carries Jones has been given since week 10 of last year. Cowboys: their 14 fourth-quarter points, and a late interception, sealed their 28-13 2 win over Washington last Sunday. Tony Romo finished with four touchdowns, all to Terrell Owens, and 293 yards through the air. Owens accounted for 173 of Romo’s passing yards. Marion Barber and Julius Jones split carries for Dallas, but the team didn’t stress the run. Barber had only 15 carries and Jones 9. The New York Jets are giving up an NFL worst 152 rushing yards per game. The Cowboys will likely mix in a few more runs this week.
Key Injuries: Jets: WR Laveranues Coles (questionable); DT Dewayne Robertson (questionable); S Eric Smith (questionable); TE Chris Baker (probable); T Anthony Clement (probable); CB Darrelle Revis (probable).
Edge: Cowboys. Barber and Jones should both be given a chance to rack up yards on the ground. And Tony Romo has been on fire all year.
Colts @ Falcons
Last Week: Colts beat Chiefs 13-10; Falcons lost to Buccaneers 31-7
Game Notes: Against the Chiefs Sunday, Peyton Manning failed to throw a touchdown pass for the first time in 13 games. Actually, Sunday’s game against Kansas City included a bunch of “firsts” for Indy. Manning’s 163 yards were his fewest yards passing since 2005. It was the first game all season that the Colts failed to score at least 20 points. And the Chiefs defense is giving up 19.2 points per game (23rd in the league). Running back Joseph Addai finished with 72 yards and one score on 21 carries. The Falcons are giving up 121.2 rushing yards a game and 202.4 passing yards a game. Statistically, their pass defense is the better of the two. Normally, I would say the Colts would have no problem handling a No. 10 ranked pass defense, but the way the Colts have been operating lately they may want to run first and pass second. Falcons: After leading the team to two consecutive wins, the Falcons benched Joey Harrington in place of Byron Leftwich last week. Leftwich didn’t look good. On 15-of-28 passing, he threw for only 106 yards, had two interceptions and two fumbles. Harrington took over late in the third quarter and completed 16-of-20 passes for 139 yards and one score. He has been named the starter Thursday against the Colts. With the Falcons scoreless through three quarters, they didn’t stress the run, and when they did they had little success. In the Falcons previous two wins, with Harrington under center, Warrick Dunn totaled 189 yards. Sunday against the Buccaneers, Warrick Dunn had 15 carries for 32 yards. If the Falcons want to win Thursday, they’ll need a big day from Dunn and efficient play from Harrington.
Key Injuries: Falcons: DT Rod Coleman (IR), DT Trey Lewis (IR); TE Alge Crumpler (probable); WR Joe Horn (doubtful). Colts: Marvin Harrision (out).
Edge: Colts. Indianapolis will use the run to set up the pass against the Falcons, and it should carry them to a win.
Raiders @ Chiefs
Last Week: Raiders lost to Vikings 29-22; Chiefs lost to Colts 13-10
Game Notes: Priest Holmes announced his retirement Wednesday. The Chiefs will now go with rookie running back Kolby Smith, who has 19 yards on the season. The team will stick with Brodie Croyle at quarterback. The two-year vet took over for Damon Huard two weeks ago and is 0-2 in his place. Sunday against Indianapolis, Croyle completed 19-of-27 for 169 yards with one score. Raiders: The Raiders pass defense is ranked 6th in the league, in part because they are giving up so much on the ground. The Raiders give up 152.6 rushing yards a game, 31st in the NFL. Thankfully for the Raiders, the Chiefs are without two running backs this week. Culpepper completed 23-of-39 passes last week for a season-high 344 yards.
Edge: Chiefs.
The Raiders offensive line can’t run block or pass block as of late. I don’t see that changing against Kansas City.
Saints @ Panthers
Last Week: Saints lost to Texans 23-10; Panthers lost to Packers 31-17
Game Notes: Testaverde has been named the starter again for week 12. But Saturday, he was downgraded to questionable (back). His back reportedly tightened up after Friday’s practice. Last week against the Packers, Testaverde passed for 258 yards with two scores and two interceptions. DeShaun Foster totaled 108 yards rushing and receiving. Saints: Reggie Bush had only 34 rushing yards in the Saints game against the Texans last week. As is the case with most quarterbacks, Drew Brees needs a running game. Brees threw for 290 yards but had two interceptions. Bush is listed as questionable for Sunday. In week 9 against Jacksonville, Brees went 35-of-49 for 445 yards and three touchdowns. The Saints also went over 100 rushing yards in that game. Brees has had a passer rating of over 100 in three games this season. It just so happens, in each of those games, the Saints went over 100 rushing yards. For the Saints to win, they’ll need to run early and often. I just do think they’re going to.
Edge: Panthers. Bush is questionable. But even when he’s in the game, he hasn’t been producing on the field. He hasn’t recorded a 100-yard game this season.
Texans @ Browns
Last Week: Texans beat Saints 23-10; Browns beat Ravens 33-30
Game Notes: The Texans had a big day from QB Matt Schaub and WR Andre Johnson in their first game back. Schaub went 21-of-33 for 293 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Johnson hauled in 120 receiving yards and one score. The team also held the Saints to 47 yards on the ground. The Texans, however, totaled 103 yards on the ground. Ron Dayne had 89 yards on 21 carries in Ahman Green’s absence. Green is out again this week. The Texans also held the Saints to 10 points. Browns: Derek Anderson had nearly as many yards, 274, as Schaub against the Ravens defense, but he had no touchdowns and one interception. The Browns totaled 111 yards on the ground, with 92 and one touchdown from Jamal Lewis.
Edge: Browns. The Texans performed better offensively last week but it was against a weaker Saints defense. Also, statistically, the Texans defense is nearly as bad as the Browns 32nd ranked D. The Browns should rack up yards through the air and on the ground.
Seahawks @ Rams
Last Week: Seahawks beat Bears 30-23; Rams beat 49ers 13-9
Game Notes: Hasselbeck was limited in practice early in the week as he rested his sore ribs, but he’ll start Sunday. Alexander is out. That will hurt Seattle’s chance at establishing a running game. But the Rams secondary isn’t very strong. Rams: Steven Jackson nearly hit 100 yards last week and the Rams got their second win in a row. But, put simply, it was against the 49ers. This week will show what the Rams are really made of.
Edge: Seahawks
Redskins @ Buccaneers
Last Week: Redskins lost to Cowboys 28-23; Buccaneers beat Falcons 31-7
Game Notes: The Buccaneers are 4-1 at home this season. Quarterback Jeff Garcia is playing the most efficient football of his career. And the Redskins’ pass defense is ranked 23rd in the league. The Buccaneers will also expect another big day from RB Earnest Graham, who had his second 100-yard game of the season last week. Redskins: The ‘Skins will look to Clinton Portis on the ground. Quarterback Jason Campbell had a splint on his throwing hand earlier in the week, but he’s no longer on the injury report.
Edge: Buccaneers. Garcia and Galloway should continue their air dominance. Graham should help on the ground.
Titans @ Bengals
Last Week: Titans lost to Broncos 34-20; Bengals lost to Cardinals 35-27
Game Notes: The Titans lead the league with nearly 35 rushing attempts per game. And the Bengals run defense is ranked 27th in the league. The Titans will use the run to set up the pass. They’ll need a few big plays from Vince Young as well. Luckily, the Bengals pass defense is ranked 26th in the NFL. Bengals: they’ve lost three of the last four games. Their passing game is ranked fourth in the league, however. Interceptions plagued the Bengals last week.
Edge: Titans. Lendale White could have a big day against the Bengals defense.
Bills @ Jaguars
Last Week: Bills lost to Patriots 56-10; Jaguars beat Chargers 24-17
Game Notes: J.P Losman will remain the starter even after Bills got smashed by the Patriots last week. Running back Marshawn Lynch is out (ankle), so it will be up to Losman to carry the load. Jacksonville’s secondary might give up a few big plays. Jaguars: the title of the NFL’s 3rd ranked rushing team belongs to the Jaguars. MJ Drew could be challenged against the Bills running defense. Quarterback David Garrard efficiently in his return last week, going 15-of-24 for 189 yards and two touchdowns.
Edge: Jaguars. MJ Drew should help relieve pressure from David Garrard in the passing game.
Vikings @ Giants
Last Week: Vikings beat Raiders 22-29; Giants beat Lions 16-10
Game Notes: Adrian Peterson was upgraded from doubtful to questionable Friday. But even with out him last week, Chester Taylor had over 160 yards and three touchdowns. But it was against the Raiders. As coach Brad Childress said, we’ll see how the Vikings do against a real team. (Maybe they’ll win by eight instead of seven.) Giants: New York is averaging nearly 130 yards per game. But Brandon Jacobs is out for Sunday. They’ll look to Derrick Ward to take his place. Ward is averaging 4.4 yards per carry. For the season, he has 448 yards and two touchdowns. The Vikings, however, rank 1st in rush defense. That will put a lot of pressure on quarterback Eli Manning. But wide receiver Plaxico Burress and Jeremy Shockey should provide some help.
Edge: Gaints
49ers @ Cardinals
Last Week: 49ers lost to Rams 13-9; Cardinals beat Bengals 35-27
Game Notes: The 49ers had chances to score last week, but they could only manage 9 points in the loss to the Rams. Frank Gore managed only 32 yards last week. Cardinals: Where the 49ers put up 9 against the Rams, the Cardinals put up 35 against the Bengals. Edgerrin James ranks 9th in the league in rushing. San Fran is ranked 24th in rushing defense.
Edge: Cardinals
Broncos @ Bears
Last Week: Broncos beat Titans 34-20; Bears lost to Seahawks 30-23
Game Notes: The Broncos surprised me last week in their 34-20 win over Tennessee. Quarterback Jay Cutler made a lot of plays with his feet. He was throwing very well on the run. The Broncos looked good in all phases of the game. Bears: In his first game back as the starter, quarterback Rex Grossman was sacked five times. The Broncos should be able to get to Grossman early and often. Hester could be a difference maker if the Broncos don’t contain him.
Edge: Broncos
Ravens @ Chargers
Last Week: Ravens lost to Browns 33-30; Chargers lost to Jaguars 24-17
Game Notes: The big question here is…was it the Ravens offense that put up 30 points last week in an overtime loss to Cleveland, or was it the Browns defense that gave up 30 points. The Ravens will look to bounce back from that ugly loss last week. I’m sure it’s still hurting. Chargers: Ladanian Tomlinson hasn’t been himself this season. He’s had only two 100-yard games. I still see the Chargers taking this one. I think the Ravens offense was a fluke last week.
Edge: Chargers
Eagles @ Patriots
Last Week: Eagles beat Dolphins 17-7; Patriots beat Bills 56-10
Game Notes: McNabb is out for Sunday’s game due to ankle and thumb injuries. The Eagles will need a perfect game to even have a chance in this one. The odds of that happening aren’t good.
Edge: Patriots
Dolphins @ Steelers
Last Week: Dolphins lost to Eagles 17-7; Steelers lost to Jets 19-16
Game Notes: Running back Ricky Williams is hoping his third…or is it fourth…time is a charm in the NFL. And Williams took a majority of the snaps in practice Friday and may start Monday according to the Miami Herald. Steelers: Troy Polamalu is out (knee), along with WR Santonia Holmes (ankle). They’ll look to rebound from a disappointing loss to the Jets. They’ll likely go to the AFC’s leading rusher Willie Parker often. Big Ben should also have a big day.
Edge: Steelers
