Week 12 Game Analysis

November 21, 2007 Eric Zimmett Leave a comment

With games on Thanksgiving, I’ve posted my analysis for those three games. I’ll post the rest soon. Enjoy…

Packers @ Lions

 cartoonturkey1.jpg

Last Week: Packers beat Panthers 31-17; Lions lost to Giants 16-10

Game Notes: Packers QB Brett Favre threw for three touchdowns in the 31-17 win last week. He had a little help from the running game as Ryan Grant carried 20 times for 88 yards, but Grant suffered an ankle injury and he’s day-to-day for Thursday. Lions: the Giants defense held the Lions to 10 points last week. Kitna threw for 377 yards but only one score. He was also picked off three times. As for the Lions running game, they attempted only 11 carries and had only one rushing first down. (Apparently their weren’t eager to improve upon thier -18 rushing yards last week.) The Green Bay Packers run defense is giving up 92.9 yards per game, 7th in the league. If the Lions didn’t run against the Giants, will they attempt to run against the Packers? I would hope they at least attempt more than 11 carries.

Key Injuries: Packers: RB Ryan Grant (probable); DT Johnny Jolly (out); S Nick Collins (out); TE Bubba Franks (out); T Chad Clifton (probable); WR Koren Robinson (probable); CB Charles Woodson (probable). Lions: S Idrees Bashir (IR); LB Teddy Lehmen (questionable); T Jonathan Scott (probable); DE Dewayne White (probable).

Edge: Packers. Favre has been carrying the Packers on his back and they’ve got momentum. The Lions will look to pass, but the Packers have hauled in nine interceptions on the season. Statistically, for every four passing TDs the Packers give up, they’re grabbing three interceptions.

Jets @ Cowboys

cartoonturkey1.jpg

Last Week: Jets beat Steelers 19-16; Cowboys beat Redskins 28-23

Game Notes: How about those Jets…seven sacks, one interception and one forced fumble in their overtime win against Pittsburgh. Quarterback Kellen Clemens’ contribution to the game isn’t visible on the stat sheet. Clemens went 14-of-31 for 162 yards, but made some big plays including a first-down scramble in the fourth quarter that helped set up a game-tying field goal. Running back Thomas Jones also had one of his biggest games of the year. Jones finished with 117 yards on 30 carries. It was the most carries Jones has been given since week 10 of last year. Cowboys: their 14 fourth-quarter points, and a late interception, sealed their 28-13 2 win over Washington last Sunday. Tony Romo finished with four touchdowns, all to Terrell Owens, and 293 yards through the air. Owens accounted for 173 of Romo’s passing yards. Marion Barber and Julius Jones split carries for Dallas, but the team didn’t stress the run. Barber had only 15 carries and Jones 9. The New York Jets are giving up an NFL worst 152 rushing yards per game. The Cowboys will likely mix in a few more runs this week.

Key Injuries: Jets: WR Laveranues Coles  (questionable); DT Dewayne Robertson (questionable); S Eric Smith (questionable); TE Chris Baker (probable); T Anthony Clement (probable); CB Darrelle Revis (probable).

Edge: Cowboys. Barber and Jones should both be given a chance to rack up yards on the ground. And Tony Romo has been on fire all year.

Colts @ Falcons

 cartoonturkey1.jpg

Last Week: Colts beat Chiefs 13-10; Falcons lost to Buccaneers 31-7

Game Notes: Against the Chiefs Sunday, Peyton Manning failed to throw a touchdown pass for the first time in 13 games. Actually, Sunday’s game against Kansas City included a bunch of “firsts” for Indy. Manning’s 163 yards were his fewest yards passing since 2005. It was the first game all season that the Colts failed to score at least 20 points. And the Chiefs defense is giving up 19.2 points per game (23rd in the league). Running back Joseph Addai finished with 72 yards and one score on 21 carries. The Falcons are giving up 121.2 rushing yards a game and 202.4 passing yards a game. Statistically, their pass defense is the better of the two. Normally, I would say the Colts would have no problem handling a No. 10 ranked pass defense, but the way the Colts have been operating lately they may want to run first and pass second. Falcons: After leading the team to two consecutive wins, the Falcons benched Joey Harrington in place of Byron Leftwich last week. Leftwich didn’t look good. On 15-of-28 passing, he threw for only 106 yards, had two interceptions and two fumbles. Harrington took over late in the third quarter and completed 16-of-20 passes for 139 yards and one score. He has been named the starter Thursday against the Colts. With the Falcons scoreless through three quarters, they didn’t stress the run, and when they did they had little success. In the Falcons previous two wins, with Harrington under center, Warrick Dunn totaled 189 yards. Sunday against the Buccaneers, Warrick Dunn had 15 carries for 32 yards. If the Falcons want to win Thursday, they’ll need a big day from Dunn and efficient play from Harrington.

Key Injuries: Falcons: DT Rod Coleman (IR), DT Trey Lewis (IR); TE Alge Crumpler (probable); WR Joe Horn (doubtful). Colts: Marvin Harrision (out).

Edge: Colts. Indianapolis will use the run to set up the pass against the Falcons, and it should carry them to a win.

Raiders @ Chiefs

Last Week: Raiders lost to Vikings 29-22; Chiefs lost to Colts 13-10

Game Notes: Priest Holmes announced his retirement Wednesday. The Chiefs will now go with rookie running back Kolby Smith, who has 19 yards on the season. The team will stick with Brodie Croyle at quarterback. The two-year vet took over for Damon Huard two weeks ago and is 0-2 in his place. Sunday against Indianapolis, Croyle completed 19-of-27 for 169 yards with one score.  Raiders: The Raiders pass defense is ranked 6th in the league, in part because they are giving up so much on the ground. The Raiders give up 152.6 rushing yards a game, 31st in the NFL. Thankfully for the Raiders, the Chiefs are without two running backs this week. Culpepper completed 23-of-39 passes last week for a season-high 344 yards.

Edge: Chiefs.

The Raiders offensive line can’t run block or pass block as of late. I don’t see that changing against Kansas City.

Saints @ Panthers

Last Week: Saints lost to Texans 23-10; Panthers lost to Packers 31-17

Game Notes: Testaverde has been named the starter again for week 12. But Saturday, he was downgraded to questionable (back). His back reportedly tightened up after Friday’s practice. Last week against the Packers, Testaverde passed for 258 yards with two scores and two interceptions. DeShaun Foster totaled 108 yards rushing and receiving. Saints: Reggie Bush had only 34 rushing yards in the Saints game against the Texans last week. As is the case with most quarterbacks, Drew Brees needs a running game. Brees threw for 290 yards but had two interceptions. Bush is listed as questionable for Sunday. In week 9 against Jacksonville, Brees went 35-of-49 for 445 yards and three touchdowns. The Saints also went over 100 rushing yards in that game. Brees has had a passer rating of over 100 in three games this season. It just so happens, in each of those games, the Saints went over 100 rushing yards. For the Saints to win, they’ll need to run early and often. I just do think they’re going to.

Edge: Panthers. Bush is questionable. But even when he’s in the game, he hasn’t been producing on the field. He hasn’t recorded a 100-yard game this season.

Texans @ Browns

Last Week: Texans beat Saints 23-10; Browns beat Ravens 33-30

Game Notes: The Texans had a big day from QB Matt Schaub and WR Andre Johnson in their first game back. Schaub went 21-of-33 for 293 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Johnson hauled in 120 receiving yards and one score. The team also held the Saints to 47 yards on the ground. The Texans, however, totaled 103 yards on the ground. Ron Dayne had 89 yards on 21 carries in Ahman Green’s absence. Green is out again this week. The Texans also held the Saints to 10 points. Browns: Derek Anderson had nearly as many yards, 274, as Schaub against the Ravens defense, but he had no touchdowns and one interception. The Browns totaled 111 yards on the ground, with 92 and one touchdown from Jamal Lewis.

Edge: Browns. The Texans performed better offensively last week but it was against a weaker Saints defense. Also, statistically, the Texans defense is nearly as bad as the Browns 32nd ranked D. The Browns should rack up yards through the air and on the ground.

Seahawks @ Rams

Last Week: Seahawks beat Bears 30-23; Rams beat 49ers 13-9

Game Notes: Hasselbeck was limited in practice early in the week as he rested his sore ribs, but he’ll start Sunday. Alexander is out. That will hurt Seattle’s chance at establishing a running game. But the Rams secondary isn’t very strong. Rams: Steven Jackson nearly hit 100 yards last week and the Rams got their second win in a row. But, put simply, it was against the 49ers. This week will show what the Rams are really made of.

Edge: Seahawks

Redskins @ Buccaneers

Last Week: Redskins lost to Cowboys 28-23; Buccaneers beat Falcons 31-7

Game Notes: The Buccaneers are 4-1 at home this season. Quarterback Jeff Garcia is playing the most efficient football of his career. And the Redskins’ pass defense is ranked 23rd in the league. The Buccaneers will also expect another big day from RB Earnest Graham, who had his second 100-yard game of the season last week. Redskins: The ‘Skins will look to Clinton Portis on the ground. Quarterback Jason Campbell had a splint on his throwing hand earlier in the week, but he’s no longer on the injury report.

Edge: Buccaneers. Garcia and Galloway should continue their air dominance. Graham should help on the ground.

Titans @ Bengals

Last Week: Titans lost to Broncos 34-20; Bengals lost to Cardinals 35-27

Game Notes: The Titans lead the league with nearly 35 rushing attempts per game. And the Bengals run defense is ranked 27th in the league. The Titans will use the run to set up the pass. They’ll need a few big plays from Vince Young as well. Luckily, the Bengals pass defense is ranked 26th in the NFL. Bengals: they’ve lost three of the last four games. Their passing game is ranked fourth in the league, however. Interceptions plagued the Bengals last week.

Edge: Titans. Lendale White could have a big day against the Bengals defense.

Bills @ Jaguars

Last Week: Bills lost to Patriots 56-10; Jaguars beat Chargers 24-17

Game Notes: J.P Losman will remain the starter even after Bills got smashed by the Patriots last week. Running back Marshawn Lynch is out (ankle), so it will be up to Losman to carry the load. Jacksonville’s secondary might give up a few big plays. Jaguars: the title of the NFL’s 3rd ranked rushing team belongs to the Jaguars. MJ Drew could be challenged against the Bills running defense. Quarterback David Garrard efficiently in his return last week, going 15-of-24 for 189 yards and two touchdowns.

Edge: Jaguars. MJ Drew should help relieve pressure from David Garrard in the passing game.

Vikings @ Giants

Last Week: Vikings beat Raiders 22-29; Giants beat Lions 16-10

Game Notes: Adrian Peterson was upgraded from doubtful to questionable Friday. But even with out him last week, Chester Taylor had over 160 yards and three touchdowns. But it was against the Raiders. As coach Brad Childress said, we’ll see how the Vikings do against a real team. (Maybe they’ll win by eight instead of seven.) Giants: New York is averaging nearly 130 yards per game. But Brandon Jacobs is out for Sunday. They’ll look to Derrick Ward to take his place. Ward is averaging 4.4 yards per carry. For the season, he has 448 yards and two touchdowns. The Vikings, however, rank 1st in rush defense. That will put a lot of pressure on quarterback Eli Manning. But wide receiver Plaxico Burress and Jeremy Shockey should provide some help.

Edge: Gaints

49ers @ Cardinals

Last Week: 49ers lost to Rams 13-9; Cardinals beat Bengals 35-27

Game Notes: The 49ers had chances to score last week, but they could only manage 9 points in the loss to the Rams. Frank Gore managed only 32 yards last week. Cardinals: Where the 49ers put up 9 against the Rams, the Cardinals put up 35 against the Bengals. Edgerrin James ranks 9th in the league in rushing. San Fran is ranked 24th in rushing defense.

Edge: Cardinals

Broncos @ Bears

Last Week: Broncos beat Titans 34-20; Bears lost to Seahawks 30-23

Game Notes: The Broncos surprised me last week in their 34-20 win over Tennessee. Quarterback Jay Cutler made a lot of plays with his feet. He was throwing very well on the run. The Broncos looked good in all phases of the game. Bears: In his first game back as the starter, quarterback Rex Grossman was sacked five times. The Broncos should be able to get to Grossman early and often. Hester could be a difference maker if the Broncos don’t contain him.

Edge: Broncos

Ravens @ Chargers

Last Week: Ravens lost to Browns 33-30; Chargers lost to Jaguars 24-17

Game Notes: The big question here is…was it the Ravens offense that put up 30 points last week in an overtime loss to Cleveland, or was it the Browns defense that gave up 30 points. The Ravens will look to bounce back from that ugly loss last week. I’m sure it’s still hurting. Chargers: Ladanian Tomlinson hasn’t been himself this season. He’s had only two 100-yard games. I still see the Chargers taking this one. I think the Ravens offense was a fluke last week.

Edge: Chargers

Eagles @ Patriots

Last Week: Eagles beat Dolphins 17-7; Patriots beat Bills 56-10

Game Notes: McNabb is out for Sunday’s game due to ankle and thumb injuries. The Eagles will need a perfect game to even have a chance in this one. The odds of that happening aren’t good.

Edge: Patriots

Dolphins @ Steelers

Last Week: Dolphins lost to Eagles 17-7; Steelers lost to Jets 19-16

Game Notes: Running back Ricky Williams is hoping his third…or is it fourth…time is a charm in the NFL. And Williams took a majority of the snaps in practice Friday and may start Monday according to the Miami Herald. Steelers: Troy Polamalu is out (knee), along with WR Santonia Holmes (ankle). They’ll look to rebound from a disappointing loss to the Jets. They’ll likely go to the AFC’s leading rusher Willie Parker often. Big Ben should also have a big day.

Edge: Steelers

Week 11 Game Analysis

November 18, 2007 Eric Zimmett Leave a comment

I apologize to anyone who was waiting for this week’s game analysis–I had a week filled with college work. But enough about me, on to the games:

Dolphins @ Eagles

Last Week: Dolphins lost to Bills 13-10; Eagles beat Redskins 33-25

Game Notes: Eagles did just what I was afraid of last week…they continued their up-and-down play to win against Washington (and I didn’t pick them). Dolphins: Running back Jesse Chatman had 27 carries for 124 yards last week. The Dolphins are making a quarterback change to rookie John Beck, which likely means Chatman will get a ton of carries against Philly. Their run defense ranks 12th in the league and they have allowed only two 100-yard rushers this year. The Dolphins have five losses by three points this season. Miami’s Ted Ginn, Jr. is fourth in the league in kick-return yards.

Key Injuries: Dolphins: DE Matt Roth (out); DE Jason Taylor (probable); MLB Zach Thomas (out); NT Keith Traylor (probable). Eagles: WR Kevin Curtis (probable); DT Mike Patterson (probable); RB Brian Westbrook (questionable).

Edge: The Eagles inconsistent play is really making me think about this one. I’m going with the Dolphins. But they’ll need a big day from Chatman, a few plays in the passing game and some great special teams. Plus I think the Eagles are going to be flat.

Buccaneers @ Falcons

Last Week: Buccaneers had a bye; Falcons beat Panthers 20-13

Game Notes: The Buccaneers have had an extra week to prepare. Traditionally, Gruden-coached teams fare pretty well coming off a bye. But the last two seasons, the Buccaneers are 0-2 following a bye-week—prior to that, Gruden’s record was 6-1. Falcons: the team is looking for its third consecutive win. Head coach Bobby Petrino hasn’t yet named a starting quarterback between Harrington and Leftwich. Running back Warrick Dunn has only recorded one 100-yard game this season (week 9). The Buccaneers rank 18th in the league in rushing yards allowed and have allowed only three 100-yard rushers this season.

Key Injuries: Falcons: WR Joe Horn (doubtful); QB Byron Leftwich (probable); Bucs: WR Michael Clayton (questionable); RB Earnest Graham (questionable); WR Ike Hilliard (probable); DE Greg Spires (out); T Jeremy Trueblood (questionable).

Edge: Buccaneers

Browns @ Ravens

Last Week: Browns lost to Steelers 31-28; Ravens lost to Bengals 21-7

Game Notes: Cleveland won the first meeting 27-13 (week 4). Kyle Boller is starting at quarterback with Steve McNair (shoulder) out. The move certainly can’t hurt—saying the Ravens offense has been lackluster the last two weeks would be a compliment. They’ve managed only 14 points combined the last two weeks. Conversely, the Browns have scored 61 combined points the last two games. The key for the Ravens here is to get Willis McGahee going early. But with the Browns high-powered offense, they might not be able to run as much as they’d like.

Key Injuries: Ravens: TE Todd Heap (questionable); CB Chris McAlister (questionable); QB Steve McNair (out). Browns: OLB Willie McGinest (probable); CB Leigh Bodden (probable); G Seth McKinney (IR); OLB Antwan Peek (probable); DE Shaun Smith (questionable); FB Lawrence Vickers (probable).

Edge: Browns

Chargers @ Jaguars

Last Week: Chargers beat Colts 23-21; Jags beat Titans 28-13

Game Notes: Jags running game helped them beat Tennessee last week: MJ Drew had 101 yards and Fred Taylor added 45. Quarterback David Gerrard is expected back this week, but they will likely continue to rely on the run. The key here is for Gerrard to take care of the ball. The Chargers are coming off an upset win against the Indianapolis Colts. The Chargers defense picked off Peyton Manning six times, a personal worst for Manning. KR/PR Darren Sproles took back two kicks for touchdowns, one punt and one kickoff. San Diego’s offense played the smallest part in the win. Phillip Rivers went 13-of-24 for a mere 104 yards with two interceptions. Tomlinson totaled only 76 yards.

Key Injuries: Jaguars: WR Ernest Wilford (probable); DL Marcus Stroud (suspension). Chargers: DE Luis Castillo (out); TE Antonio Gates (probable); OLB Shawne Merriman (probable); C Nick Hardwick (out).

Edge: Jaguars

Saints @ Texans

Last Week: Saints lost to Rams 37-29; Texans had a bye

Game Notes: Saints were outplayed last week until the fourth quarter. But it was too little too late. Bush has yet to record a 100-yard game this year, but the Texans rank 24thagainst the run. Drew Brees and the Saints passing game has been the most impressive part of their team this year. They could have a big game against the Texans defense. Texans: quarterback Matt Schaub is set to return this week. Wide receiver Andre Johnson is also healthy and back on the field.

Key Injuries: Texans: DT Amobi Okoye (probable); K Kris Brown (probable); CB Jamar Fletcher (out); RB Ahman Green (out). Saints: T Jammal Brown (doubtfull); DE Charles Grant (questionable); DT Brian Young (out).

Edge: Texans

Chiefs @ Colts

Last Week: Chiefs lost to Broncos 27-11; Colts lost to Chargers 23-21

Game Notes: The Colts blew their chances of walking away with a win last week when Adam Vinatieri missed a 29-yard field goal. They’ll likely be ready for a bounce-back win this week. Quarterback Brodie Croyle has been named the Chiefs starter. It will be his first career start. Chiefs passing game didn’t get going AT ALL last week without Larry Johnson. And they’ll be without Johnson again this week.

Key Injuries: Colts: DE Dwight Freeney (IR); WR Anthony Gonzalez (questionable); WR Marvin Harrison (questionable); SS Bob Sanders (questionable). Chiefs: RB Larry Johnson (out); T Damion McIntosh (probable); T Will Svitek (out).

Edge: Colts

Giants @ Lions

Last Week: Gaints lost to Cowboys 31-20; Lions lost to Cardinals 31-21

Game Notes: Both teams are coming off a week 10 loss. Mistakes killed the Giants last week in a loss to the Cowboys. The Lions lack of a running game last week (-18) yards forced the team to rely too much on the pass. The Giants lead the league with 32 sacks this season. The Lions defense leads the league with 28 takeaways. On paper, this game is so evenly matched up it’s driving me crazy…except for one category: the run game. Brandon Jacobs could be the difference in an otherwise even contest.

Key Injuries: Lions: WR Calvin Johnson (probable); QB John Kitna (probable); Giants: WR Plaxico Burress (questionable); MLB Antonio Pierce (questionable); WR Steve Smith (out); RB Derrick Ward (out).

Edge: Giants

Panthers @ Packers

Last Week: Panthers lost to Falcons 20-13; Packers beat Vikings 34-0

Game Notes: QB Byron Leftwich is expected to start. Packers are, um, good. Favre lit it up in the passing game last week and RB Grant had over 100 yards for the second time this year. Panthers: Testaverde is expected to start at QB in place of a healthy David Carr. The Panthers are on a three-game losing streak.

Key Injuries: Panthers: RB DeShaun Foster (probable); WR Steve Smith (questionable). Packers: CB Charles Woodson (probable); WR Koren Robinson (probable); TE Bubba Franks (out); FS Nick Collins (out).

Edge: Packers

Raiders @ Vikings

Last Week: Raiders lost to Bears 17-6; Vikings lost to Packers 34-0

Game Notes: Tarvaris Jackson set to come back as starter for Minnesota. Adrian Peterson is out with a partial tear of lateral collateral ligament in right knee. But his backup, Chester Taylor, is averaging five yards a carry. And that’s just about what the Raiders give up per rush. Minnesota’s also good against the run, ranking second in the league. Oakland: quarterback Daunte Culpepper will make a return to the starting lineup against his former team. The last time Culpepper faced a former team, he had his best game of the year. In a week four win over Miami, Culpepper totaled five touchdowns with two passing TDs and three rushing. Will Minnesota get Culpepper fired up?

Key Injuries: Vikings: SS Eric Frampton (questionable); RB Adrian Peterson (out); DE Brian Robinson (probable); CB Antoine Winfield (probable). Raiders: CB Nnamdi Asomugha (questionable); QB Josh McCown (doubtful); WR Jerry Porter; CB Fabian Washington (questionable); OLB Sam Williams (questionable); C Jake Grove (doubtful).

Edge: Vikings

Cardinals @ Bengals

Last Week: Cardinals beat Lions 31-21; Bengals beat Ravens 21-7

Game Notes: Both teams are coming off a week 10 win. The Bengals special teams came through last week. Cincinnati scored all 21 of its points from field goals. Luckily for the Bengals, they were playing the Ravens last week…so their pathetic defense didn’t look so bad. Cardinals QB Kurt Warner shouldn’t have much trouble against the Bengals secondary. The Bengals offense

Key Injuries: Bengals: WR Chad Johnson (probable); CB Deltha O’Neal (probable). Cardinals: FS Aaron Francisco (questionable); MLB Gerald Hayes (probable); QB Kurt Warner (probable); SS Adrian Wilson (questionable).

Edge: Cardinals

Steelers @ Jets

Last Week: Steelers beat Browns 31-28; Jets had a bye

Game Notes: Steelers came back in win over Cleveland last week (they are undefeated at home). Steelers have 2nd ranked rushing offense. The Jets have the 32ndranked in the league in rushing yards allowed. I’m not Adam Schefter but I don’t think that’s a good combination for New York. The Jets do, however, have a great kick-return team. KR Leon Washington has three kickoff returns for touchdowns this year (which leads the league). The Steelers kick coverage unit ranks 27thin the league. If the Steelers can win the special teams battle they should have no problem leaving New York with a victory.

Key Injuries: Jets: TE Chris Baker (probable); T Anthony Clement (probable). Steelers: FB Dan Kreider (probable); RB Willie Parker (probable); OLB LaMarr Woodley (out).

Edge: Steelers

Bears @ Seahawks

Last Week: Bears beat Raiders 17-6; Seahawks beat 49ers 24-0

Game Notes: Seahawks: the 49ers didn’t even challenge the ‘hawks last week, getting shut out on the road. Hasselbeck put up 278 yards passing with two touchdowns and one interception. Running back Maurice Morris filled in nicely for Shaun Alexander, putting up 87 yards on 28 carries. He should at least match that against the Bears—they rank 26thin the league in rushing yards allowed. Bears: Rex Grossman has the starting QB job back. An 80-yard touchdown pass to Bernard Berrian gave the Bears a 10-6 lead and eventual win last week. Running back Cedric Benson is averaging only 3.2 yards per carry. The Bears defense should challenge Hasselbeck in coverage and with pressure. The Seahawks are ranked 10th in rushing yards allowed, but the Bears shouldn’t worry because they don’t’ have a running game. Seattle ranks 20th against the pass but has ONLY GIVEN UP FIVE PASSING TOUCHDOWNS (that’s the fewest in the league). Their defense has also grabbed nine interceptions.

Key Injuries: Bears: DT Tommie Harris (questionable). Seahawks: RB Shaun Alexander (probable); DT Rocky Bernard (probable); WR Deion Branch (questionable); OLB Will Herring (out).

Edge: Seahawks

Rams @ 49ers

Last Week: Rams beat Saints 37-29; 49ers lost to Seahawks 24-0

Game Notes: The Rams picked up their first win of the season last week but still have a beaten up offensive line. Running back Steven Jackson is healthy and back for his second week in a row. 49ers: Frank Gore is probable and will face a Rams defense ranked 22nd against the run. San Francisco won the first meeting 17-16.

Key Injuries: 49ers: NT Aubrayno Franklin (out); RB Frank Gore (probable); WR Ashley Lelie (out); QB Alex Smith (probable). Rams: C Richie Incognito (IR); WR Isaac Bruce (probable); WR Dante Hall (probable); TE Aaron Wlaker (IR).

Edge: Rams. The 49ers would win if they commit to the run with Gore. But they’ve shown all season that they don’t want to do that.

Redskins @ Cowboys

Last Week: Redskins lost to Eagles 33-25; Cowboys beat Giants 31-20

Game Notes: The Redskins have won only once in their last 10 trips to Dallas. Portis had 137 rushing yards last week for Washington, but it was in a losing effort. A Redskin receiver hauled in a touchdown pass for the first time all season last week against the Eagles. The Cowboys pass defense ranks 17th in the league.

Key Injuries: Cowboys: G Leonard Davis (questionable); WR Terry Glenn (out); CB Anthony Henry (probable). Redskins: G Pete Kendall (probable); WR Santana Moss (probable); CB Fred Smoot (probable); FS Sean Taylor (out); WR James Thrash (out); OLB Marcus Washington (probable); WR Brandon Lloyd (IR).

Edge: Cowboys

Patriots @ Bills

Last Week: Patriots had a bye; Bills beat Dolphins 13-10

Game Notes: I have a “word problem” for you: If the Patriots are undefeated in the regular season through week 9 with no bye week, how will they fare in week 11 after two weeks to prepare? You get the idea. The Bills offense got off to a s…l…o…w start last week against the Dolphins but pulled it out in the end. They had better not do the same thing Sunday or it will be a long day.

Key Injuries: Bills: RB Marshawn Lynch (doubtful); DE Aaron Shobel (probable). Patriots: ILB Eric Alexander (questionable); QB Tom Brady (probable); OLB Mike Vrabel (questionable); WR Wes Welker (questionable). FS Eugene Wilson (questionable).

Edge: Patriots

Titans @ Broncos

Last Week: Titans lost to Jags 28-13; Broncos beat Chiefs 27-11

Game Notes: Lendale White and the Titans ground shouldn’t have any excuses this week as they face the Broncos 31stranked run defense (over 150 yards allowed per game). The Titans should lean heavily on the run and look for a few big plays from Vince Young. Broncos: Selvin Young filled in nicely last week for running back Travis Henry, posting 109 yards and one score on 20 carries. The Titans run defense has been playing well this season (with the exception of last week against Jacksonville). If their defense is back on track they should be able to control this game.

Key Injuries: Broncos: K Jason Elam (probable); RB Travis Henry (questionable); FS John Lynch (probable); WR Javon Walker (out). Titans: CB Nicholas Harper (questionable); DT Albert Haynesworth (questionable).

Edge: Titans

Week 10 Game Analysis

November 7, 2007 Eric Zimmett Leave a comment

It’s all about division games this week as 10 of the 14 games are division match-ups. I’ve noted the division games at the end of each Game Notes.

Broncos @ Chiefs

Last week: Broncos lost to Lions 44-7; Chiefs lost to Packers 33-22

Game Notes: Broncos were completely flat last week, almost getting shut out on the road. Quarterback Jay Cutler left the game with a lower leg injury in the second quarter. He was replaced by Patrick Ramsey. Running back Travis Henry was also sidelined with a knee injury. Cutler had an MRI Monday, which came back negative. But head coach Mike Shanahan said the injury could limit Cutler in practice and his status Sunday is still uncertain. According to ESPN, Cutler looked “sharp” in practice Wednesday. The Chiefs gave Brett Favre and the Packers a close game until the Packers pulled away in the end. Chiefs running back Larry Johnson is doubtful with a sprained right foot. Update: Larry Johnson is officially out. Jay Cutler is listed as probable. Running back Travis Henry is out; kicker Jason Elam is questionable (who has been the reason for all of their wins this season). Division Game: AFC West.

Edge: Chiefs

Bills @ Dolphins

Last week: Bills beat Bengals 33-21; Dolphins had a bye

Game Notes: The Bills have won four of their last five games. The Bengals and Bills exchanged the lead throughout the game, and it wasn’t over until two-and-a-half minutes remained in the fourth quarter. Quarterback J.P. Losman played well against the Bengals in Trent Edwards absence. Losman finished 24-of-34 for 295 yards and one touchdown (plus one int). Running back Marshawn Lynch recorded the first 100-yard game of his career (he finished with 153 rushing yards and one touchdown). Lynch also threw a touchdown pass. The Bills named QB J.P. Losman the starter again this week. Update: Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas is officially out for Sunday. Division Game: AFC East.

Edge: Bills- their offense was impressive last week. Lynch recorded his first 100-yard game and Losman put up 295.

Vikings @ Packers

Last week: Vikings beat Chargers 35-17; Packers beat Chiefs 33-22

Game Notes: Vikings surprised me against the Chargers last week; but who could have anticipated Adrian Peterson’s 296-yard rushing performance? (By the way, he’s pretty good.) Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson was knocked out of the game with a concussion. He is recovering but his status is day-to-day. The team signed free-agent quarterback Koy Detmer. The Packers came away with a win in Kansas City with another impressive game from quarterback Brett Favre, who totaled 360 yards and two touchdowns (with two interceptions). The running game didn’t really get going this week but it wasn’t really stressed. Update: Tarvaris Jackson is listed as probable but Brooks Bollinger will start. Kelly Holcomb is out. Division Game: NFC North. Last time: Packers won 23-16 in week 4

Edge: Packers- it’s hard to bet against Brett Favre, but Adrian Peterson would be one reason to do it. The Packers limited him to 112 yards (but he carried the ball only 12 times). The Vikings defense ranks 31st in the league in passing yards allowed.

Browns @ Steelers

Last week: Browns beat Seahawks 33-30; Steelers beat Ravens 38-7

Game Notes: Browns offense came through once again, as they pulled out an overtime win. Cleveland came back from a 21-6 deficit before halftime to take the lead in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks had a chance to win it late, but the Browns defense held them to a field goal (I couldn’t believe it either) to send the game into overtime. It was there that K Phil Dawson hit a 25-yard field goal for the win. The Steelers soundly beat the Ravens Monday night. Ben Roethlisberger, who thew for five touchdowns in the win, had to leave the field with a hip injury in the third quarter but would later return. Update: the Browns placed starting right guard Seth McKinney on IR Saturday. Division Game: AFC North. Last time: Pittsburgh won 34-7 in week 1

Edge: Steelers- the key here is the Steelers defense against the Browns offense.

Rams @ Saints

Last week: Rams had a bye; Saints beat Jags 41-24

Game Notes: Do you feel a Brees? Yes, Drew Brees is quite possibly playing the best football of his career. Against the Jaguars, Brees went 35-of-49 for 445 yards and three touchdowns. Last week he finished 31-of-39 for 336 yards and four touchdowns in a win over San Fran. Look for more from him next week against the winless Rams. Running back Reggie Bush totaled 72 yards on 17 carries and added a touchdown against the Jags. Oh, and nice gutsy onside kick in the first quarter, coach. The Saints successful onside kick in the first quarter led to a touchdown drive, and a 10-0 lead before the Jags even got the ball on offense. Rams RB Steven Jackson returned to practice Wednesday and will play Sunday against the Saints. Update: Running back Reggie Bush is active and will start.

Edge: Saints – Drew Brees might be the difference here.

Jaguars @ Titans

Last week: Jags lost to Saints 41-24; Titans beat Panthers 20-7

Game Notes: Jags QB Quincy Gray filled in nicely for an injured David Gerrard, putting up 354 yards through the air with two touchdowns…but he also threw three interceptions (one of which was taken back for six). Gerrard practiced Wednesday on a limited basis. his status for Sunday is uncertain, but a healthy Gerrard would really change things. Running back Maurice Jones-Drew didn’t add much to the running game last week but he did return a kick 100 yards for a score. Jags DT Marcus Stroud has been suspended four games for violating the league’s policy on anabolic steroids and related substances. Titans QB Vince Young had another unproductive day passing against the Panthers with a mere 110 yards and two interceptions. Young did add 25 rushing yards and one score. Running back LenDale White totaled 100 yards on the ground on 31 carries and a score. It was White’s third consecutive game with at least 100 yards rushing. The Titans defense sacked QB David Carr seven times for a loss of 30 yards. Rob Bironas connected on two field goals in the 20-7 win. Update: Gerrard is out, as well as Titans DT Albert Haynesworth. Division Game: AFC South. Tennessee won 13-10 in week 1

Edge: Titans- Vince Young’s got to pick up his play eventually; this week could be the time. The Jags won’t be able to rely on the run this week without Gerrard (assuming he doesn’t play); the Titanks rank 1st in the league in rushing yards allowed.

Eagles @ Redskins

Last week: Eagles lost to Cowboys 38-17; Redskins beat Jets 23-20

Game Notes: Since week two, the Eagles haven’t won more than one game in a row. They lost in week two; won big in week three; lost in week four; (had a bye week); won in week six; lost in week seven; won in week eight; then lost to Dallas in week nine. Following the trend would mean a win in Washington. Last Sunday against the Jets, the Redskins came back from a 17-3 deficit in the second quarter to take the lead in the fourth. Running back Clinton Portis helped set up a 46-yard field goal in overtime for the win. Portis finished with 196 yards and one score on the ground on 36 carries. Updatde: Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El were held out of the Redskins practice Friday due to injury. Moss has a bruised heel and is incactive. Randle El is listed as probable. Division Game: NFC East. Last time: Washington won 20-12 in week 2

Edge: Redskins- The ’skins comeback against the Jets showed a lot about the team (even if it was the Jets). Although, the Eagles up-and-down play is tempting me to pick them (I know it’s crazy but it’s been true so far).

Falcons @ Panthers

Last week: Falcons beat 49ers 20-16; Panthers lost to Titans 20-7

Game Notes: Quarterback Joey Harrington didn’t do much with only 138 passing yards. Running back Warrick Dunn had a big day, though, totaling 100 yards and one touchdown on 27 carries. It was Dunn’s first 100-yard game of the season. The Falcons defense also hauled in three interceptions. Panthers QB David Carr was sacked seven times against the Titans. Carr finished with only 107 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The team announced Monday that Carr suffered a concussion late in Sunday’s game. Carr sat out practice Wednesday. His status for Sunday’s game against Atlanta is uncertain. Backup quarterback Vinny Testaverde is nursing his Achilles tendon, but practiced with the team Wednesday. The Panthers third QB on the depth chart is undrafted rookie Matt Moore, who split time in practice with Testaverde.  Update: Testaverde practiced for the second consecutive day Thursday and it appears more likely he will start Sunday. Moore split reps with Testaverde again while Carr sat. (The team’s original starter, quarterback Jake Delhomme, is out for the year.) The Panthers also placed LB Dan Morgan on IR this week. Update: Falcons WR Joe Horn is questionable because of a hamstring injury. Division Game: NFC South. Last time: Panthers won 27-20.

Edge: Falcons–Dunn should have a big day against the Panthers defense.

Bengals @ Ravens

Last week: Bengals lost to Bills 33-21; Ravens lost to Steelers 38-7

Game Notes: The Bengals and Bills exchanged the lead throughout the game, and it wasn’t over until two-and-a-half minutes remained in the fourth quarter. The Ravens couldn’t manage to put anything together offensively against the Steelers on a sloppy field. Quarterback Steve McNair totaled 63 passing yards and Willis McGahee rushed for 50 on 12 carries (I think that pretty much sums up their offensive production). Division Game: AFC North. Last time: Bengals won 27-20 in week 1.

Edge: Bengals- can anyone say offense? The Ravens sure can’t.

Bears @ Raiders

Last week: Bears had a bye; Raiders lost to Texans 24-17

Game Notes: JaMarcus Russell anyone? Raider fans sure hope so. Head coach Lane Kiffin has shown stubbornness in changes on the quarterback depth chart (for good reason: they don’t have any worthy quarterbacks) but after Josh McCown’s pathetic performance Sunday, it might be time to put rookie JaMarcus Russell into the game. McCown finished 13-28 for 158 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions (a few interceptions were dropped, too, just for the record). I thought McCown would be an improvement over Daunte Culpepper, who has been careless with the ball. BUT, it turns out, McCown was just as careless. Running back Justin Fargas was the team’s lone bright spot on offense, as he finished with 104 yards and one score on only 24 carries. Newly acquired WR/KR/PR Tim Dwight (that would be a cluttered business card) hauled in a touchdown catch in his first game with the Silver and Black.

Edge: Bears- anyone playing the Raiders has a good chance of leaving with a win.

Lions @ Cardinals

Last week: Lions beat Broncos 44-7; Cardinals lost to Buccaneers 17-10

Game Notes: The Lions humiliated the Broncos last Sunday. Lions QB John Kitna finished 16-of-31 for 252 with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Running back Kevin Jones totaled 71 yards on 17 carries (4.2 yards a carry). T.J. Duckett added 48 yards and one score on only five carries. The Lions lead the league with 24 takeaways and 90 points off turnovers.

Edge: Lions- 24 takeaways and 90 points of turnovers. Enough said.

Cowboys @ Giants

Last week: Cowboys beat Eagles 38-17; Giants had a bye

Game Notes: Cowboys looked hot last Sunday against the Eagles. Quarterback Tony Romo made only one bad pass, which was intercepted. Luckily for the Cowboys, Donovan McNabb returned the favor a few plays later. The Cowboys, however, capitalized on McNabb’s mistake. Romo totaled 324 passing yards and three touchdowns in the Cowboy’s seventh win of the season. The Eagles, on the other hand, kept their streak of up and down play going another week. Giants WR Plaxico Burress practiced on a limited basis Wednesday. It was his first practice since Sept. 12. Update: Burress didn’t practice Friday (but he hasn’t practiced most of the season) and is listed as questionable. Division Game: NFC East. Last time: Cowboys won 45-35 in week 1

Edge: Cowboys- this is a tough one, though: division match-up, Giants coming off a bye, looking to upset America’s team…

Colts @ Chargers

Last week: Colts lost to Patriots 24-20; Chargers lost to Vikings 35-17

Game Notes: Colts looked like they had New England defeated Sunday…but you know those tricky Patriots with their handy gadgets (we mean their players, not their spy tools). The Chargers will be ready to rid themselves of last week’s loss to the Vikings, but I’m pretty sure the Colts want to get the taste of a Patriot loss out of their mouths even more. Update: Harrison didn’t make the trip to San Diego and is out for Sunday.

Edge: Colts- at least the Chargers won’t have to worry about Adrian Peterson this week.

49ers @ Seahawks

Last week: 49ers lost to Falcons 20-16; Seahawks lost to Browns 33-30

Game Notes: As we said in the Browns vs. Steelers analysis, the Seahawks had the game won against Cleveland…but let Derek Anderson and Co. take the lead in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks almost took it back later in the fourth but had to settle for a field goal to send the game into overtime. Matt Hasselbeck finished 30-of-47 for 318 yards and two touchdowns (plus one interception). The Seahawks ground game isn’t what it used to be, especially Shaun Alexander, who—minus his rookie campaign—is having the least productive season of his eight-year career. An injury didn’t help. 49ers Alex Smith had a rough week against the Falcons. Smith threw three interceptions, and didn’t look completely healthy. 49ers have lost six straight. Update: 49ers coach Mike Nolan missed his second straight day of practice Saturday for family reasons. Update: Running back Shaun Alexander is listed as questionable. Wide receiver Deion Branch is also questionable, as well as TE Marcus Pollard. Division Game: NFC West. Last time: Seahawks won 23-3 in week 4.

Edge: Seahawks- Hasselbeck had a big game, but his team fell short in the end. I see them taking this one after a tough overtime loss.

Week 9 Game Analysis

October 31, 2007 Eric Zimmett Leave a comment

Patriots (8-0) @ Colts (7-0)

Last week: Colts beat Panthers 31-7; Patriots beat Redskins 52-7

Game notes: Colts started slow last week against the Panthers. That marks the second week in a row that the Colts offense was kept in check in the first quarter. The Panthers held the Colts to one field goal in the first quarter Sunday and 10 points in the first half. Manning didn’t complete a pass in the first quarter. (Although, the Panthers had the ball for over 11 minutes in the first.) Last week, the Colts were held scoreless for nearly the entire first quarter until Joseph Addai scored on a goal-line run with 35 seconds remaining. If the Colts start slow again this week, their opponent won’t be so forgiving. The Patriots have scored more points than any team in the NFL. And they have scored on their first possession in every game this season. Update: Colts WR Marvin Harrison has been cleared to play Sunday. Two Patriots defenders are out: safety Eugen Wilson and linebacker Eric Alexander.

Edge: Patriots. As we said, the Colts have been getting off to a slow start, having scored only 10 first-quarter points combined in the last two weeks. The Patriots should take advantage early.

Broncos (3-4) @ Lions (5-2)

Last week: Lions beat Bears 16-7; Broncos lost to Packers 19-13

Game notes: the Broncos almost came away with another last-second win against Green Bay. (Actually, I don’t know how they didn’t score a touchdown from three yards out.)  But no cornerback could have stopped the throw from Brett Favre in overtime. The Broncos three wins have come by a combined seven points…I said a COMBINED seven points. That’s both good and bad. The good: they’ve found a way to win late, with last-second field goals from Jason Elam. The bad: they could easily be 0-7.

Edge: Lions

49ers (2-5) @ Falcons (1-6)

Last week: Falcons had bye; 49ers lost to Saints 31-10

Game notes: Drew Brees ate up the 49ers pass defense for 336 yards and 4 touchdowns last week. The 49ers offense did little against the Saints. Smith passed for 190 yards in his first week back from injury and Frank Gore totaled 41 yards on only 12 carries. Gore has been down-graded to questionable. The Falcons are giving up 126.4 yards per game on the ground. Update: Gore is inactive for Sunday

Edge: Falcons

Bengals (2-5) @ Bills (3-4)

Last week: Bengals lost to Steelers 24-13; Bills beat Jets 14-3

Game notes: The Bills will start QB J.P Losman in place of Trent Edwards. Edwards needs more time to recover from a sprained right wrist. Losman took over for Edwards last week and produced two scoring drives in the 14-3 win over the Jets. The teams’ defenses are equally bad. It looks like it will be an offensive battle. Bills RB Marshawn Lynch is ranked No. 10 among running backs with 537 yards on the season. But Cincinnati has a back of its own in Kenny Watson, and Rhudi Johnson is expected back this week.

Edge: Bengals. Carson Palmer is ranked 4th in passing yards and the Bengals are putting up over 25 points a game. The Bills defense doesn’t match up well; they are giving up 253 passing yards/game (that’s 29th in the league).

Panthers (4-3) @ Titans (5-2)

Last week: Titans beat Raiders 13-9; Panthers lost to the Colts 31-7

Game notes: the Titans are on a five-game winning streak, but their offense barely produced enough in a 13-9 win over the Raiders. It took the team until the third quarter to score a touchdown. Vince Young finished 6-of-14 for 42 yards (no, that’s not a typo). One player that did put up numbers was LenDale White, who had 25 rushes for 133 yards, a 5.3 average. The Panthers opening drive against the Colts lasted 11 minutes, covered 80 yards in 18 plays, and resulted in a touchdown. Though the score wouldn’t indicate it, the Panthers gave the Colts a game for the first half of play. The Colts took a 10-7 lead before the half, but the Panthers opening drive made a big statement. Vinny Testaverde sat out practice Wednesday while David Carr took the snaps at quarterback. The Panthers’ defense has given up five passing plays of 40+ yards this season. Will Vince Young take advantage? Carolina has a great one-two punch at running back with DeShaun Foster and DeAngelo Williams, but the Titans run-defense is ranked No. 1 in the league.

Edge: Titans

Packers (6-1) @ Chiefs (4-3)

Last week: Chiefs had a bye; Packers beat Broncos 19-13

Game notes: Was that a running game I saw with the Packers last week? Yeah, that’s right, the Packers actually ran the ball and did it well. Ryan Grant totaled 104 yards on 22 carries, a 4.7 average. And then there’s Brett Favre. His game-winning 82-yard toss on the first play of overtime could not have been more perfect. The Chiefs offense just did enough in week 7 against the Raiders. Huard had only 177 yards, but Larry Johnson broke the 100-yard mark with 112 yards on 24 carries and one score. But Favre has still got it. And the Packers have momentum.

Edge: Packers

Chargers (4-3) @ Vikings (2-5)

Last week: Vikings lost to Eagles 23-16; Chargers beat Texans 35-10

Game notes: Tomlinson is back on track but should be challenged against the Vikings run defense, which is giving up a mere 74.4 yards a game. The pass might be a better option for San Diego; the Vikings are giving up an NFL-high 288.3 yards per game through the air.

Edge: Chargers

Jaguars (5-2) @ Saints (3-4)

Last week: Jaguars beat Bucs 24-23; Saints beat 49ers 31-10

Game notes: Saints are on a three-game win streak, but the Jags have won five straight, including a 24-23 win over the Bucs last week. However, Jags QB David Gerrard is out; Quinn Gray will start in his place. The Jags won with the running game last week, but the Saints run defense is ranked No. 10th in yards per game. The Saints blasted San Fran last week, but surprisingly it wasn’t because of Reggie Bush. Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 336 yards and four touchdowns. Bush, meanwhile, had 64 yards on 10 carries.

Edge: Saints

Redskins (4-3) @ Jets (1-7)

Last week: Jets lost to Bills 14-3; Redskins lost to Patriots 52-7

Game notes: The Redskins experienced just how good the Patriots are last week in a 52-7 loss. Jets backup QB Kellen Clemens was named the starter over Chad Pennington…which shouldn’t really matter Sunday. What would help Clemens is a good running game. Too bad the Jets don’t have one. Redskins QB Jason Campbell didn’t put up big numbers, but it was better than the ‘Skins ground game. Clinton Portis totaled 27 yards on 11 carries. Look for the Redskins to run more against the Jets. They’re ranked 27th in rushing yards allowed per game.

Edge: Redskins

Cardinals (3-4) @ Bucs (4-4)

Last week: Cardinals had a bye; Bucs lost to Jacksonville 24-23

Game notes: Bucs’ Jeff Garcia threw his first interception of the year in the Bucs 24-23 loss to Jacksonville (he finished with three interceptions). I’ve been high on the Bucs the last couple of weeks but they have let me down both times. This week they’re bouncing back.

Edge: Bucs

Seahawks (4-3) @ Browns (4-3)

Last week: Seahawks had a bye; Browns beat Rams 27-20

Game notes: Browns offense came through again. After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, the Browns came back to tie it up 17-17 at halftime and held on for the 27-20 win. But the Browns defense…um, how do I put this…sucks.

Edge: Browns

Texans (3-5) @ Raiders (2-5)

Last week: Texans lost to Chargers 35-10; Raiders lost to Titans 13-9

Game notes: Raiders: their offense is non-existent. They didn’t even score a touchdown last week against the Titans and were held scoreless for the entire second half. It has been the reason for their losses as of late. Culpepper doesn’t deserve to start another game, not the way he is playing. I don’t see Kiffin handing No. 1 pick JaMarcus Russell the starting QB job yet; but I do see him making the switch back to Josh McCown. McCown has been sidelined since he was injured in week three. Justin Fargas should see more action in the backfield. He’s averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Texans: Schaub is not expected to start at quarterback. Sage Rosenfels would start in Schaub’s place. It will be Rosenfel’s third start of his career and his first since 2005. Rosenfels took over for Schaub last week against the Chargers and put up 176 yards on 17-of-27 passing with one touchdown and two interceptions. The Raiders defense has been the most consistent part of their team this season. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will likely try to throw some things at him he hasn’t seen. Raider linebackers Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard could add an interception or two to their season stats. Update: The Raiders named Josh McCown the starting quarterback over Daunte Culpepper.

Edge: Raiders

Cowboys (6-1) @ Eagles (3-4)

Last week: Cowboys had a bye; Eagles beat Vikings 23-16

Game notes: The Eagles have been up-and-down all season. Last week was an up week. Next week is a down week, and it doesn’t help that they’re playing the Cowboys.

Edge: Cowboys

Ravens (4-3) @ Steelers (5-2)

Last week: Ravens had a bye; Steelers beat Bengals 24-13.

Game notes: The Steelers are on a five-game winning streak, and their offense is too much for the Ravens here. And not because the Ravens defense is poor (it isn’t) but because the Ravens offense can’t score any points. The Steelers running game will be challenged, though.

Edge: Steelers

Week 8 Game Analysis

October 24, 2007 Eric Zimmett Leave a comment

Lions @ Bears
Last week: Lions (4-2) beat Bucs; Bears (3-4) beat Eagles

Game notes: Lions beat Bucs but did nothing offensively. Kevin Jones is healthy and ready to roll but the Lions didn’t use him (15 carries for 76 yards—5 yards per carry and a long of 17 yards.) The Bears are ranked 26th in rushing yards allowed. Calvin Johnson had two big plays against the Bucs (but that’s about it). Bears QB Brian Griese had a big day of 322 yards and one scrore in a win over the Eagles. The team didn’t get anything from their running game (though they didn’t stress it). Cedric Benson carried 17 times for 46 yards. The Lions beat a better team (the Bucs) than the Bears did (the Eagles).

Edge: Bears

Steelers @ Bengals
Last week: Steelers (4-2) lost to Broncos; Bengals (2-4) beat Jets

Game notes: The Bengals got off to a slow start against the Jets. Running back Kenny Watson played very well, rushing for 130 yards and two scores. The Bengals defense is another story. The Steelers got off to slow start against Broncos in Denver. The Steelers blew it, but looked good in second half. Roethlisberger went 24-35 for 290 yards 4 TD but 2 INT.

Edge: Steelers

Giants @ Dolphins… @ London
Last week: Giants (5-2) beat 49ers; Dolphins (0-7) beat Patriots

Game notes: Giants looked good (but against 49ers). Dolphins put up 21 in the fourth against Pats, outscored Pats 21-7 in second half. Quarterback Cleo Lemon put up 236 yards passing…not bad against Pats. If starting the season 0-7 wasn’t bad enough, the Dolphins also lost RB Ronnie Brown and CB Renaldo Hill for the remainder of the season with knee injuries. Linebacker Zach Thomas might not make the trip to London after a minor car accident.

Edge: Giants

Eagles @ Vikings

Last week: Eagles (2-4) lost to Bears; Vikings (2-4) lost to Cowboys

Game notes: Vik’s T. Jackson did nothing against Cowboys defense. Jackson (hand) will reportedly be a game-time decision. Peterson had a mere 63 yards on the ground. McNabb looked ok against the Bears. Brian Westrbook failed to reach 100 yards in the loss. The Eagles have been playing up-and-down football all season. After last week’s loss, they might be due.

Edge: I’m kind of up in the air with this one.

Browns @ Rams
Last week: Browns (3-3) had a bye; Rams (0-7) lost to Seahawks Game notes: Seahawks dominated the Rams last week. Bulger was ok in first game back. But here we are again. It’s got to happen sometime… the Rams have to win eventually. Running back Steven Jackson practiced Wednesday and may be able to play Sunday. He could be what the Rams need to notch their first W. The Browns are playing pretty well at 3-3, but will they be the team that gives the Rams their first win?

Edge: Browns

Colts @ Panthers
Last week: Panthers (4-2) had a bye; Colts (6-0) beat the Jags

Game notes: Colts took a while to get started against the Jaguars. But they eventually got on track. The Panthers had a bye week and are playing well at 4-2. If healthy, David Carr is expected to start Sunday.

Edge: Colts

Raiders @ Titans
Last week: Raiders (2-4) lost to Chiefs; Titans (4-2) beat Texans

Game notes: Young is expected to return this week. The Titans kicking game came through against the Texans and backup QB Kerry Collins played well in the comeback win. Their Running game was good as well. The Raiders offense started slow…and finished slow against the Chiefs. Their Running game didn’t get on track for second week in a row. The Raider defense played pretty well, stopping the Chiefs running attack for a while (gave up a 54 yard run and 126 on the day). Culpepper was spotty, showing signs of being great but then making bad throws and getting sacked twice and hurried often. The Raiders offense surpassed its touchdown total last season with its 13th TD…which, I guess, is a good sign.

Edge: Titans

Texans @ Chargers
Last week: Chargers (3-3) had a bye; Texans (3-4) lost to Titans

Game notes: Texans looked good, even without Schaub. He’s listed as questionable for Sunday. The Chargers are in the mix in the AFC West and with LT you can never count them out.

Edge: I was going with the Texans, but now I’m thinking Chargers.

Jags @ Bucs
Last week: Jags (4-2) lost to Colts; Bucs (4-3) lost to Lions

Game notes: Bucs put up big numbers but turnovers and a blocked punt lost them the game. Garcia playing very efficiently- smart football. Still no interceptions and 316 yards last week with two scoring throws (7 TD 0 INT for year). Bucs RB Earnest Graham had 92 yards on 19 carries (long 14) AND 99 yards receiving. (Graham was reminiscent of Charlie Garner; in 2001 RB Garner totaled 578 receiving yards from QB Rich Gannon.) Michael Bennett should get more carries this week. I’ve got to believe the Bucs are going to win this one, with as efficient as Garcia is playing the Bucs running game plus the addition of Bennett. Jaguars quarterback David Garrard will be sidelined up to four weeks. According to NFL Network, Maurice Jones-Drew is expected to suit up against the Bucs.

Edge: Bucs

Bills @ Jets

Last week: Bills (2-4) beat Ravens; Jets (1-6) lost to Bengals

Game notes: The Bills beat the Ravens but had little offensive production. Running back Marshawn Lynch had 27 carries for 84 yards and one score. But that’s about all the team did. Bills QB Trent Edwards went 11-of-21 for 153 including a 54-yarder to Lee Evans and will again start over J.P Losman Sunday. Pennington played well against the Bengals but threw one costly, late interception. Head coach Eric Mangini has named Pennington the starter again this weekend. The  Jets running game was mediocre against Cincinnatti: T. Jones had 19 carries for 67 yards, a 3.5 average. And the Jets were up early…they should have been running more! The Jets defense is ranked 28th in rushing yards allowed per game, which bodes well for Lynch.

Edge: Bills

Redskins @ Patriots
Last week: Redskins (4-2) beat Arizona; Patriots (7-0) beat Dolphins

Game notes: Belichick was at the game. And he’ll be there this week.

Edge: Pats

Saints @ 49ers
Last week: Saints (2-4) beat Falcons; 49ers (2-4) lost to Giants

Game notes: Gore looked good early, slow late. Dilfer played ok but made some rookie-like throws. 49ers RB Frank Gore was on pace to break 100 against the Giants. If the 49ers weren’t coming from behind, they likely would have run more. But Gore didn’t practice Wednesday and is listed as probable. According to ESPN.com. Alex Smith is expected to start at quarterback Sunday. Smith has been out since Sept. 30 with a separated shoulder. Saints Bush did nothing (54 yards). But he only had 17 carries. Why won’t the Saints run? Brees had just over 200 yards passing.

Edge: I’m going with the Saints.

Packers @ Broncos
Last week: Packers (5-1) had bye; Broncos (3-3) beat Steelers

Game notes: Broncos looked good vs. Steelers. Willie Parker carried 21 times for 93 yards. Broncos QB Jay Cutler went 22-29 for 248 yards and 3 TD (2 INT). The Broncos didn’t rely on the run at all; Henry had 17 carries for 51 yards.

Edge: Packers

Week 7 Game Analysis

October 17, 2007 Eric Zimmett Leave a comment

Tennessee Titans @ Houston Texans
Last week: Titans (3-2) lost to the Bucs; Texans (3-3) lost to the Jaguars

Game notes: Vince Young didn’t practice Wednesday; Kerry Collins may start in his place at quarterback. (Update: Young took part in snaps with the Titans scout team Friday, but his status for Sunday is still in question. According to espn.com he is still listed as questionable.) The Titans have a better running game than the Texans, but Houston has a better passing game, statistically anway.

Edge: Update: I had the Texans with the edge Wednesday, but after checking the matchups, I’m going with the Titans. Houston relies too much on the passing game and the Titans defense has only given up three touchdowns through the air.

Baltimore Ravens @ Buffalo Bills
Last week: Ravens (4-2) beat the Rams; Bills (1-4) had a bye week

Game notes: QB Steve McNair was out last week; backup quarterback Kyle Boller played well in his place.

Edge: we’re going with the Ravens, though the Bills gave the Cowboys a hell of a game in week five, only to lose by one, 25-24.

Minnesota Vikings @ Dallas Cowboys
Last week: Minnesota (2-3) beat the Bears; Cowboys (5-1) lost to Patriots

Game notes: running back Adrian Peterson scorched the Bears defense last week for 224 yards on the ground in a 34-31 win. The Cowboys are ranked 8th against the run this year, giving up a mere 79.7 yards per game. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo ranks third in passing yards with 1,707, with only Brett Favre (1,715) and Tom Brady (1,771) ahead of him.

Edge: Peterson looks to be a major factor here, but the Cowboys defense will likely give him a challenge. And, as always, Romo will likely have a big day. I give the edge to the Cowboys.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Detroit Lions
Last week: Bucs (4-2) beat the Titans; Lions (3-2) had a bye week

Game notes: the Buccaneers picked up RB Michael Bennett from the Chiefs, providing a much-needed veteran running back. Jeff Garcia is playing very well at QB for the Bucs, still without an intercpetion.

Edge: I’m giving it to the Bucs because of Jeff Garcia (boy, I never thought I’d write that).

Arizona Cardinals @ Washington Redskins
Last week: Cards (3-3) lost to the Panthers; Redskins (3-2) lost to the Packers

Game notes: Cardinals backup quarterback Tim Rattay is expected to start in place of injured Kurt Warner. Warner actually started the season as the backup but became the full-time starter when Matt Leinart went down. The Redskins gave the Packers a close game Sunday and quarterback Jason Campbell continues to improve.

Edge: I’m giving the edge to the Redskins because of Campbell and the Cardinals continual changes at quarterback.

San Francisco 49ers @ New York Giants
Last week: 49ers (2-3) had a bye week; Giants (4-2) beat the Falcons

Game notes: 49ers quarterback Alex Smith was limited in practice Wednesday and is listed as questionable.

Edge: the Giants get the edge here.

Atlanta Falcons @ New Orleans Saints
Last week: Falcons (1-5) lost to Giants; Saints (1-4) beat the Seahawks

Game notes: this looks to be a competitive one–the battle of the 1-win teams. Actually, the Saints were impressive against Seattle last week; Reggie Bush had a big day. Quarterback Byron Leftwich is replacing Joey Harrington for the Falcons.

Edge: I’m going with the Saints because of the revival of Reggie Bush.

New England Patriots @ Miami Dolphins
Last week: Pats (6-0) beat the ‘Boys; Dolphins (0-6) lost to the Browns

Game notes: the Patriots look better than ever; and that’s saying a lot. Tom Brady now has weapons at wide receiver and their defense is playing great. As for the Dolphins…um… everything I said about the Pats except the opposite.

Edge: is this even necessary? Pats.

Kansas City Chiefs @ Oakland Raiders
Last week: Chiefs (3-3) beat Bengals; Raiders (2-3) lost to Chargers

Game notes: the question here with the Raiders is which Daunte Culepper will show up? Will it be the 5-TD Superman-esque performance, or will it be the Culpepper against San Diego–indecisive and immobile? Priest Holmes returned to practice with the Chiefs and may split carries with Larry Johnson Sunday.

Edge: Culpepper’s play could be the deciding factor here; if he manages the offense well and the Raiders run the ball, they will win. But, if not, I’m giving it to the Chiefs because of their running game (and Oakland’s inability to stop it.)

New York Jets @ Cincinnati Bengals
Last week: Jets (1-5) lost to the Eagles; Bengals (1-4) lost to the Chiefs

Game notes: running back Rhudi Johnson was out last week for the Bengals; he’s listed as probable. (Update: Rhudi didn’t practice Thursday. He is listed as doubtfull) Jets QB Chad Pennington is listed as questionable, though most Jets fans want him listed as benched.

Edge: Update: Both defenses are weak. The Bengals passing offense is ranked 2nd in the leauge. The Bengals defense is giving up 145 yards on the ground per game. This is kind of crazy, but…it will come down to the Jets QB, presumably Kellen Clemens, and Bengals RB Kenny Watson (averaging 5.2 yards a carry). Whoever has a bigger game–Clemens or Watson–will carry their team to a win. I’m giving it to the Bengals.

Chicago Bears @ Philadelphia Eagles
Last week: Bears (2-4) lost to the Vikings; Eagles (2-3) beat the Jets

Game notes: the Bears played well against Minnesota. And then there’s this one guy…what’s his name again? Oh, yeah–Devin Hester.

Edge: Bears. Quarterback Brian Griese is playing well and Devin Hester is scoring from every position on the field.

St. Louis Rams @ Seattle Seahawks
Last week: Rams (0-6) lost to the Ravens; Seahawks (3-3) lost to the Saints

Game notes: Marc Bulger is reportedly back in as the Rams starting quarterback, and the team signed WR Travis Taylor Wednesday. Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck made some bad decisions against the Saints last week.

Edge: the easy pick here would be the Seahawks, but, as we said, Hasselbeck made some bad throws against the Saints–and the Rams have to win eventually, don’t they?

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Denver Broncos
Last week: Steelers (4-1) had a bye week; Broncos (2-3) had a bye

Game notes: the Broncos need to stay alive in the AFC West. The Steelers need to stay ahead in the AFC North.

Edge: the Steelers should win this one, but you can never count out the Broncos in Mile High.

Indianapolis Colts @ Jacksonville Jaguars
Last week: Colts (5-0) had a bye; Jags (4-1) beat the Texans

Game notes: the Colts are on fire and have had two weeks to prepare. But the Jaguars are also impressive with QB David Garrard and RB Maurice Jones-Drew.

Edge: this is a real test for both teams–are the Colts the same team as last year? And are the Jags for real? We’ll find out here, but I give the edge to the Colts.
