ESPN: Culpepper to start…uh, wait…McCown to start

Based on the demeanor of Oakland Raiders QB Daunte Culpepper in practice, ESPN believes he will get the starting nod in week 1 of the regular season. (I guess he had the green dot on his helmet.)

The Raiders, however, have not yet publicly named the starting quarterback between Culpepper and Josh McCown.

The Raiders.com depth chart reads as follows: QB: 8 D. Culpepper/12 J. McCown. Andrew Walter is listed as the current second-string quarterback, but will likely shift to No. 3 when a starter is named.

According to Sirius NFL Radio, Kiffin has named the starter but has not publicly said who will start –translation– prepare for both quarterbacks, Detroit. The Raiders face the Detroit Lions Sunday at 4:15 p.m. et.

Update: Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the Raiders are expected to announce McCown as the starting quarterback. But again, no announcment has been made by the Raiders, and no announcment is expected until game day.

Update 2: ESPN has now reported that McCown is taking a majority of the reps with the first-team offense. ESPN (pronounced Eee Ess Pee Enn) now believes McCown will be the starter.

Hey, I just thought of something–call it an epiphany: it’s easy to get a story right if you report both possibilities.
